t-butyl 7-phenylhept-2-enoate (2 g; 7.7 mmol) and thiophenol (1.2 g; 11 mmol) are dissolved in THF (25 mL) and cooled to 0° C. n-BuLi (2.5 M in hexane; 0.3 mL; 0.7 mmol) is added dropwise and the reaction is allowed to warm and stir at 20° C. for 3 hours. The reaction is concentrated in vacuo and purified by column chromatography using 5% Et2O/petroleum ether to obtain t-butyl 7-phenyl-3-phenylsulfanylheptanoate.
