Reaction Steps
208.4 g of methyl 2-keto-L-gulonate are dissolved in 500 g of methanol and the solution is heated to boiling while stirring. 52 g of sodium carbonate are added in the course of 2 hours. The pH value is then 8. The mixture is stirred for 30 minutes, cooled to 40° C. and the precipitated sodium ascorbate is filtered off and washed with 100 g of methanol. The moist sodium ascorbate is dried in a drying oven at 40° C. under reduced pressure. There are obtained about 198.1 g of crude sodium ascorbate with a content of pure sodium ascorbate of about 94%.
