To a solution of 2-amino-4-methoxycarbonylphenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (2.6 g) in a mixture of pyridine (5.6 ml) and dichloromethane (20 ml) was added benzyl chloroformate (2.08 ml) at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 4.5 hours. The mixture was diluted with dichloromethane and washed successively with diluted hydrochloric acid, aqueous sodium bicarbonate and brine. The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel eluting with dichloromethane to give 2-benzyloxycarbonylamino-4-methoxycarbonylphenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (2.61 g) as colorless crystals.
