Procedure
7.32 g of sodium methoxide were added to a solution of 6.00 g of 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-5-phenylisoxazole in 500 ml of dimethylformamide, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 10 minutes. 10.4 g of epibromohydrin were then added dropwise at room temperature to the mixture, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 48 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by column chromatography through silica gel, eluted with a 2:1 by volume mixture of cyclohexane and ethyl acetate, to give 5.60 g of the title compound as colorless cotton-like crystals, melting at 87°-88° C.
