Procedure
363 mg of methyl 10-chloro-4-oxo-3-phenyl-4H-benzo[a]quinolizine-1-carboxylate were hydrogenated at room temperature in 50 ml of ethyl acetate in the presence of 6 mg of 10 percent palladium/carbon. The catalyst was removed by filtration and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The-residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel and the product was crystallized from methanol. There was obtained methyl 10-chloro-6,7-dihydro-4-oxo-3-phenyl-4H-benzo[a]quinolizine-1-carboxylate of m.p. 138°-139°.
