Procedure

0.25 g of methyl 4-oxo-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)-4H-quinolizine-1-carboxylate was suspended in 3 ml of ethanol and treated with 3 ml of 1N sodium hydroxide solution. The mixture was heated to reflux until the reaction has finished. 13 ml of water were added and the mixture was acidified with 1N hydrochloric acid. The yellow crystals, were removed by filtration and dried. After recrystallization from ethyl acetate, there was obtained 4-oxo-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)-4H-quinolizine-1-carboxylic acid as yellow crystals of m.p. 228°-229°.
