A mixture of 15.55 g of N-(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)-N-[3-(octadecyloxy)-5-(phenylmethoxy)phenyl]glycine methyl ester and 3.0 g of 10% palladium on carbon in 500 ml of THF was stirred in a hydrogen atmosphere at room temperature until uptake ceased after 23 hours. The catalyst was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated at reduced pressure to a solid which was triturated with hexane and filtered to give 12.8 g (97% yield, 96°-98°) of N-[3-hydroxy-5-(octadecyloxy)phenyl]-N-(2-methoxy-2-oxoethyl)glycine methyl ester.
