Procedure
To a solution of 3.58 g (14.8 mmol) of 2-phthalimidoethylpyrazole in 45 ml of methanol was added 1.11 g (22.2 mmol) of hydrazine hydrate, and the mixture was refluxed for 7 hr. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was washed with CH2Cl2 and ethyl acetate, and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated under reduced pressure, and then 2.73 g (13.3 mmol) of 2-oxo-1-phenoxycarbonylpyrrolidine (II) was added to the residue, and the mixture was heated at 115°-120° C. for 3 hr. After cooling, the reaction mixture was refined by silica gel column chromatography, and the resulting crystalline product obtained from the eluate with toluene/ethyl acetate (3/1-1/1 v/v) was recrystallized from ether, whereby 1.91 g (64.7%) of the objective compound (I a-38) melting at 62.5°-63.5° C. was obtained.
