Reaction Steps

To 14.3 g (0.088 mole) of methylmagnesium iodide in 75 ml of ether is slowly added at less than 10°, 14.5 g (0.059 mole) of the α-(2,4-dichlorophenyl) hexanal. When the addition is complete, the reaction is stirred for 1 hour then heated up to reflux for 2 hours. The reaction is cooled and poured into water. The mixture is acidified with hydrochloric acid and the oil which separates is extracted out with water. The ether solution is dried and concentrated to give 11.7 g (76%) of the crude product.
