To a warm solution of 106.4 g of (80.5%) 8-amino-1,3,5-naphthalenetrisulfonic acid in 100 ml of water and 45.0 ml of 5N sodium hydroxide is slowly added 500 ml of absolute ethanol with vigorous stirring for 30 minutes. The mixture iw cooled to room temperature and filtered. The precipitate is washed with 80% aqueous ethanol, ethanol and ether and is dried in vacuo at 110° C. for 16 hours to give 103.7 g of 8-amino-1,3,5-naphthalenetrisulfonic acid trisodium salt.
