A mixture of crude 2-chloromethyl-4-phenylthiazole (4.19g; 0.02 mole), N-phenylpiperazine (3.24 g; 0.02 mole) and finely-powdered, anhydrous sodium carbonate in absolute ethanol (60 ml) was stirred and boiled under reflux for 8 hours. The solvent was evaporated to dryness, solid residue suspended in water (100 ml) and then extracted with 2 × 100 ml CH2Cl2. The extracts were washed with water and dried over anhydrous MgSO4. On evaporation of the solvent, and recrystallisation of the residue from benzene/60°-80° C. petroleum ether mixture (with charcoal treatment) there was obtained the required product (5.03 g; 75%) having m.p. 142°-3° C.
