Into a 100 ml, one neck flask is placed 10 grams of sodium methyl maleate, 60 mls N,N-dimethyl formamide (DMF) and 40 grams nitroethane. The solution is heated at 60° C. for two hours and then partially distilled in vacuo to remove the DMF and nitroethane. The residue, by NMR analysis (D2O), has the following structure: ##STR41## CH3 (a) doublet of doublets (one centered at 1.44δ; one centered at 1.57δ)
