Procedure
A cooled suspension of 1.4 g (0.00486 mol) of 2-(1-methylethyl)-4-oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-7-carboxylic acid (Example 18) in 150 ml of ethanol is saturated with hydrogen chloride. The mixture is stirred and refluxed in a wax bath at 128° C. for eighteen hours under nitrogen. The ethanol is evaporated in vacuo to give 0.43 g of 2-(1-methylethyl)-4-oxo-4H-pyrido[1,2-a]thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine-7-carboxylic acid, ethyl ester; mp 122°-123° C. after recrystallization from absolute ethanol.
