A mixture of 4.5 g (0.03 mole) of the 2,3-dimethyl-2-aminobutyronitrile hydrochloride, 4.8 g (0.06 mole) of 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide, 15 ml of dichloromethane and 15 ml of water was prepared. A second solution of 7.5 g (0.03 mole) of 2,3-dibromopropionyl chloride in 15 ml dichloromethane was added with rapid stirring to the first mixture at 10°-15° C. The mixture was then allowed to reach room temperature.
