Procedure
200 g of ethyl 1-(m-methoxyphenyl)-2-oxo-cyclohexaneacetate are dissolved in 2000 ml of ethanol, and after treatment with 20 g of platinum oxide, the mixture is reduced with hydrogen at 50° C. and 50 bar. After separation of the catalyst, the solvent is removed by distillation, and there is obtained ethyl 2-hydroxy-1-(m-methoxyphenyl)-cyclohexaneacetate in the form of a light yellow oil.
