Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Ethanol | HCID 702 | — |
| Reactant | Sulfuric Acid | HCID 1118 | — |
| Reactant | (3-Bromophenyl)acetic acid | HCID 74653 | — |
| Product | Ethyl 3-(bromophenyl)acetate | HCID 11470552 | — |
Reaction Steps
5 g of 3-bromophenylacetic acid are dissolved in 80 ml of ethanol, 3 ml of concentrated H2SO4 are added and then the solution is heated at reflux for 2 hours. The ethanol is evaporated and the residue is neutralized with saturated K2CO3 solution and then extracted with AcOEt and dried over MgSO4. This gives 5.2 g of the expected compound in liquid form.
