Ethanol → Ethyl 3-(bromophenyl)acetate
Reaction equation
[Br:1][C:2]1[CH:3]=[C:4]([CH2:8][C:9]([OH:11])=[O:10])[CH:5]=[CH:6][CH:7]=1.OS(O)(=O)=O.[CH2:17](O)[CH3:18]>>[Br:1][C:2]1[CH:3]=[C:4]([CH2:8][C:9]([O:11][CH2:17][CH3:18])=[O:10])[CH:5]=[CH:6][CH:7]=1Participants

Procedure
5 g of 3-bromophenylacetic acid are dissolved in 80 ml of ethanol, 3 ml of concentrated H2SO4 are added and then the solution is heated at reflux for 2 hours. The ethanol is evaporated and the residue is neutralized with saturated K2CO3 solution and then extracted with AcOEt and dried over MgSO4. This gives 5.2 g of the expected compound in liquid form.
