N′-[4-(1,2,2,6,6-Pentamethyl-piperidin-4-ylcarbamoyl)-phenyl]-hydrazinecarboxylic acid tert-butyl ester was dissolved in 4M HCl in dioxane (30 ml) and left to stir for 1-2 hrs. The solution went quickly from a deep orange colour to a bright orange colour. After 1 hr reaction time, the solvent was removed under vacuum to reveal an orange oil that under a vacuum for several minutes crystalised out to give orange crystals in a sticky orange oil.
