A solution of 28.3 (20 mg, 0.05 mmol) in 5:1 pyridine:water (6 mL) was heated to 80° C. for 72 hours. The reaction was poured into 500 mL of water and the solution was acidified with 1N HCl(aq) (65 mL). The aqueous solution was extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic layers were washed with water, followed by brine. The combined organic layers were then dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated in vacuo. The resultant residue was then purified via radial chromatography (30% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to yield 18 mg (quantitative) 3-[4-(2-Methyl-benzylsulfanyl)-phenyl]-hex-4-ynoic acid (28). LC/MSD m/e: 323.1 (M−H).
