A solution of 2-nitrobenzenesulfonyl chloride (14.15 g, 64 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (50 mL) was added dropwise over 20 min to an ice cold solution of 1,1-dimethylethyl (3S)-4-amino-3-[(3-chloro-4-cyanophenyl)amino]butanoate (19.8 g, 64 mmol) and Et3N (6.5 g, 64 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (150 mL) and the reaction was stirred at room temperature for 30 min. The reaction was washed with H2O and cold 0.1 N HCl. The organic layer was dried over CaCl2, filtered, and concentrated. The crude product was used directly in the next step.
