(R)-methyl 3-methyl-2-(5-nitro-1-oxoisoquinolin-2(1H)-yl)butanoate (2.8 g, 0.0091 mol) was stirred with palladium 10% wt. on calcium carbonate (0.23 g, 0.00011 mol) in methanol (40 mL, 1 mol) under hydrogen (balloon) over 1 h at room temperature. The catalyst was filtered, the filtrate was concentrated to dryness and yielded a yellow oil. MS m/z 274.8 (M+H)+.
