A mixture of 2-[2-hydroxy-3-(2-chlorophenoxy)phenyl]acetic acid (1.9 g), methyl iodide (2.3 g) and potassium carbonate (2.2 g) in acetone (40 ml) was refluxed under heating for 4.5 hrs. After cooling, the reaction mixture was filtered. The filtrate was evaporated, and the oily residue was dissolved in methanol (30 ml). To the solution was added potassium hydroxide (1 g), and the mixture was refluxed under heating for 30 minutes. After cooling, the reaction mixture was evaporated and the residue was dissolved in water. The aqueous solution was washed with diethyl ether, acidified with conc. hydrochloric acid and extracted with diethyl ether. The extract was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated. The residue was recrystallized from a mixture of benzene and n-hexane to give 2-[2-methoxy-3-(2-chlorophenoxy)phenyl]acetic acid (1.35 g). mp 87°-92° C.
