Procedure
To a solution of 2-(N-methyl-N-benzylamino)-ethyl 2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-ethoxycarbonyl-6-diethoxymethyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate (7.25 g) in acetone (70 ml) was added 6 N-hydrochloric acid (7 ml) and the resultant mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure. Water was added to the residue, where an oily substance appeared. The aqueous mixture was adjusted to an alkaline medium by addition of power of sodium bicarbonate, and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water and dried, and the solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure to give a reddish oil (5.8 g) of 2-(N-methyl-N-benzylamino)-ethyl 2-methyl-4-(3-nitrophenyl)-5-ethoxycarbonyl-6-formyl-1,4-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate.
