Procedure
3.24 g of 1,3-bis(benzylideneamino)-2-methylimidazolium chloride are dissolved in 50 ml of methanol. The solution is cooled to 0° (internal temperature) and treated while stirring with a solution of 2.6 g of potassium cyanide in 8 ml of water, whereby the temperature is not allowed to rise substantially. After 15 minutes, the methanol is removed by evaporation in a vacuum at the lowest possible temperature. The residue is diluted with 30 ml of water, whereupon the mixture is extracted three times with chloroform. The dried chloroform extract is evaporated and there is obtained 1-benzylideneamino-2-methylimidazole of m.p. 125°.
