Procedure

10.16 g of 1-benzylideneamino-2-mercaptoimidazole are suspended in 30 ml of absolute ethanol and treated with a solution of 1.15 g of sodium in 70 ml of absolute ethanol. After the addition of 7.1 g of methyl iodide, the reaction mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. For the work-up, the resulting yellow solution is concentrated to a quarter and 100 ml of water are added. The resulting crystalline crude product is removed by filtration, washed three times with water and recrystallized from methanol/water. There is obtained 1-benzylideneamino-2-methylmercaptoimidazole of m.p. 95°-97°.
