Procedure
(2,5-Dibromothiophen-3-yl)-oxo-acetic acid ethyl ester (1.71 g, 5.0 mmol) was dissolved in 15 ml acetone and 2 ml water, then treated with 15 ml concentrated HCl at reflux for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then poured into 100 ml water, and extracted into 100 ml of dichloromethane. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under vacuum to yield crude (2,5-dibromothiophen-3-yl)-oxo-acetic acid which was used without further purification.
