Procedure
To a solution of 1,4-diformylnaphthalene (490 mg, 2.66 mmol) in THF (12 mL) was added dropwise at 0° C. isopropyl magnesium chloride (1.3 mL of a 2 M solution in THF). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hr, diluted with satd. NH4Cl (10 mL), and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×10 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. Flash chromatography (silicagel, hexane:ethyl acetate, 5:1) provided the title compound (81 mg, 14%).
