To a solution of 1-amino-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-propan-2-ol and 2-amino-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-propan-l-ol (1.2 g, 6.4 mmol) in CHCl3 (50 mL) at 0° C. was added a solution of di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (1.74 g, 7.9 mmol) in CHCl3 (10 mL) in one portion and the resulting solution was stirred overnight at room temperature. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel (2:1 hexane-EtOAc followed by EtOAc) to obtain [2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)-2-hydroxy-propyl]-carbamic acid-tert-butyl ester and [1-(3,4-Difluorophenyl)-2-hydroxy-propyl]-carbamic acid-tert-butyl ester as a white solid (1.1 g, 60.1%).
