To a 0° C. solution of 5-chloro-2-{2-[4-(4-fluoro-benzyl)-2,5-dimethyl-piperazin-1-yl]-2-oxo-ethoxy}-pyridine-3-carbaldehyde (0.200 g, 0.47 mmol) in ethanol (5 mL) was added potassium carbonate (0.131 g, 0.95 mmol) in water (0.30 mL) and triethyl phosphonium acetate (0.21 g, 0.19 mL). The reaction mixture was warmed to room temperature over 48 hours, filtered through celite, the filter cake was washed with ethanol and concentrated in vacuo. Purification via chromatography on silica gel gave the title compound (0.102 g).
