A mixture comprising 45 g of 4-chlorobenzyl cyanide, 62 g of 2-trifluoromethylbenzoyl chloride and 210 ml of tetrahydrofuran, was dropwise added over a period of 1 hour at a temperature of not higher than 15° C. to the mixture comprising 70 g of potassium tertiary butyrate and 450 ml of tetrahydrofuran. After completion of the dropwise addition, the solution temperature was returned to room temperature, followed by the reaction for 1 hour. 500 ml of ice water was poured into the residue obtained by concentration under reduced pressure of the reaction mixture, followed by stirring for 15 minutes, whereupon the mixture was washed with 500 ml of methylene chloride. The aqueous layer was adjusted to pH 3 to 4 by concentrated hydrochloric acid and then extracted with 600 ml of methylene chloride. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. 300 ml of n-hexane was added to the residue, followed by washing to obtain 87.6 g of the desired product.
