Reaction Steps
A solution of potassium hydroxide in ethanol was added to ethyl 4-[(E)-2-(2,2,4,4,7-pentamethylchroman-6-yl)propen-1-yl]benzoate (Compound 24) and the resulting mixture stirred at room temperature. Solvent was removed in-vacuo and the resulting solid taken-up in water, acidified using 1N HCl, and extracted three times was ether. The ether extracts were washed with water, brine and dried (MgSO4). The solvent was removed in-vacuo to give the title compound as a pale yellow solid.
