Procedure

A solution of KOH (0.25 g, 4.46 mMol) in water (4.4 mL), was added to 4-fluoro-benzaldehyde Compound 2a (1.07 mL, 10 mMol) and the mixture was heated to 65° C. Cyclooctanone Compound 1a (1.26 g, 10 mMol) was added dropwise over a period of 15 mins. The mixture was refluxed for 5 hrs, then allowed to stir overnight at room temperature. The reaction mixture was acidified with 1N HCl (26 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (100 mL). The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4, then filtered and concentrated. The resulting yellow residue was purified on silica gel column with 3% EtOAc/Hexane to give (2E)-2-(4-fluoro-benzylidene)-cyclooctanone Compound 2b (1.04 g, 44.8%).
