Procedure

t-Butyl 6-hydroxymethylpyridine-2-carboxylate (1.34 g) and diisopropylethylamine (1.24 g) were dissolved in 30 mL of methylene chloride, 0.54 mL of methanesulfonyl chloride was added dropwise thereto at ice temperature, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The solvent was removed from the reaction mixture, and then the residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel (hexane-ethyl acetate=5:1) to give t-butyl 6-chloromethylpyridine-2-carboxylate as a yellow powder.
