p-Cymene (100 ml) and palladium carbon (0.9 g) were added to 6-ethoxycarbonylamino-1-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinoline, followed by heating under stirring at 195° C. for one hour in a nitrogen atmosphere. The catalyst was filtered off and washed with ethanol, and then the filtrate was partially evaporated. After extracting with 1N hydrochloric acid, the extract was basified with potassium carbonate and then extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate anhydride. The solvent was evaporated, to give the title compound (0.629 g, 69%, 2 steps) as pale yellow crystals.
