Procedure

To a solution of 3.0 g (9.5 mmol) of the product of Step B and 1.25 g (10.1 mmol) of N-hydroxymethyl-2-chloroacetamide in 20 mL CH2Cl2 was added 25 mL of trifluoroacetic acid. The reaction mixture was stirred under a nitrogen atmosphere overnight and then concentrated in vacuo. The residue was partitioned between EtOAc and excess saturated aqueous NaHCO3. The aqueous layer was separated and re-extracted with EtOAc. The organic layers were then combined, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and evaporated in vacuo to afford the title compound.
