Procedure
A solution of 15.18 g of methyl 2-(3-methyl-but-2-enoylamino)benzoate and 35.07 g of aluminium trichloride in 250 ml of 1,2-dichloroethane is stirred at reflux over 30 minutes. The reaction mixture is cooled to room temperature, diluted with dichloromethane, washed with 1N HCl (2×) and brine, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated by evaporation. The title compound is obtained as a brown solid from the residue by means of flash chromatography (SiO2 60F). Rf=0.21 (3:7 EtOAc-heptane); Rt=3.98.
