To a mixture of dimethyl 4-allyl-5-hydroxyisophthalate (376b) (5.05 g, 20.18 mmol) and Cs2CO3 (13 g, 40.1 mmol) in CH3CN (30 mL) was added benzyl bromide (3.6 mL, 30.27 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 14 hours. The solution was treated with water, and extracted with EtOAc (2×). The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated to provide the desired product as white solid (6.5 g, 98% yield). The crude product was used without purification. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CHLOROFORM-d) δ ppm 3.85 (t, J=6.78 Hz, 2 H) 3.89-3.93 (m, 3 H) 3.93 (s, 3 H) 4.93-4.99 (m, 1 H) 4.99-5.07 (m, 1 H) 5.16 (s, 2 H) 5.87-6.11 (m, 1 H) 7.30-7.38 (m, 1 H) 7.39-7.55 (m, 4 H) 7.74 (d, J=1.51 Hz, 1 H) 8.12 (d, J=1.70 Hz, 1 H); MS (ESI, pos):341.
