To a stirred solution of tert-butyl 2-(diethoxyphosphoryl)-3-(1,3-thiazol-4-yl)propanoate (step 1, 7.17 g, 20.5 mmol) in tetrahydrofran (100 mL) was added sodiumhydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil, 820 mg, 20.5 mmol) at 0° C. under nitrogen. After 10 min, to the mixture was added paraformaldehyde (1.85 g, 61.5 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 45 min. The mixture was quenched with aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with hexane/ethyl acetate (3/1) to afford 4.25 g (92%) of the title compound as a colorless oil:
