To tert-butyl 2-(2-oxo-6-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,4-dihydroquinolin-1(2H)-yl)acetate (202 mg, 0.50 mmol) in a 50 mL round-bottom flask was added 4N hydrochloric acid in 1,4-dioxane (6.0 mL, 24.0 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours, and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. A second portion of 4N HCl in 1,4-dioxane (6.0 mL, 24.0 mmol) was added with stirring for another 13 hours, and again the solvent was removed under reduced pressure, to afford 2-(2-oxo-6-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3,4-dihydroquinolin-1(2H)-yl)acetic acid as a solid (162 mg, 0.46 mmol, 92%). LCMS mz 350.0 (M+H), 372.0 (M+Na), anal HPLC>97% in purity, 1H NMR (400 MHz; CDCl3) δ 7.67 (m, 4H); 7.40-7.50 (m, 2H); 6.92 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 1H); 4.76 (s, 2H); 3.04 (m, 2H); 2.79 (m, 2H), 1.48 (s, 9H).
