4-Hydroxymethylimidazole hydrochloride ACROS (5 g, 37.1 mmol) was suspended in CH2Cl2 (100 ml) and TEA (12.87 ml, 92.8 mmol) was added. The solution was cooled at 0° C. and tert-butyldiphenylsilylchloride (15.3 ml, 55.7 mmol) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min at 0° C. and at room temperature for 3.5 h. Water was added, the organic extract was washed with water and brine, then died over MgSO4. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the resulting oil was crystallized from diisopropylether to afford a white solid (8.17 g, m.p.=135° C.).
