To 4-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-indole-5-carbonitrile (0.210 g, 1.00 mmol) in DMF (20 mL), was added Cs2CO3 (0.489 g, 1.50 mmol) and bromoacetonitrile (0.180 g, 1.50 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated at 75° C. under an N2 atmosphere for 1 hr. Dilution with water was followed by extraction with Et2O. The combined organic portions were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. Purification (SiO2, EtOAc/hexanes) afforded 0.211 g of the title compound: MS (ESI): m/z 250 (M+1).
