To a solution of 5-bromo-2-methyl-4-(trifluoromethyl)-2,3-dihydro-1H-indole (0.09 g, 0.320 mmol; step C above) in 1,4-dioxane (5 mL) at rt was added DDQ (0.110 g, 0.48 mmol) in one portion. After 1 h, the mixture was poured into water and extracted with Et2O (×3). Combined organics were washed (1 N NaOH, H2O, brine), dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (EtOAc/hexanes), affording 0.056 g of the title compound as a pale yellow solid: 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 8.07 (bs, 1H), 7.36 (m, 1H), 7.25 (d, J=5.0 Hz, 1H), 6.47 (s, 1H), 2.48 (s, 3H).
