Boron tribromide (1 M in CH2Cl2, 6 mL) was added to an anhydrous CH2Cl2 (20 mL) solution of 4 (550 mg, 1.5 mmol). After stirring at room temperature for 24 h, the reaction mixture was quenched with ice water (10 mL) and neutralized with solid NaHCO3 (1.51 g, 18.0 mmol). The mixture was diluted with pH 7 buffer solution (Fisher, 20 mL) and extracted with dichloromethane-methanol (4:1, 3×100 mL). The extracts were combined, dried with anhydrous Na2SO4, and evaporated. The residue was treated with CH2Cl2/MeOH, to give pure 2-(4-iodophenyl)-1,3-benzothiazol-6-ol (5) as a white solid (295 mg, 55.8%).
