A mixture of methanesulfonic acid 1,4-dioxa-spiro[4.5]dec-8-yl ester (2.80 g, 11.9 mmol) and sodium azide (3.86 g, 59.3 mmol) in 50 mL of dry DMF was stirred for 20 h at 100° C. under nitrogen. The final mixture was cooled to room temperature dilute with brine and extracted with three portions of ether. The organic portions were combined, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give 8-azido-1,4-dioxa-spiro[4.5]decane (2.2 g, 100%).
