Procedure
Under a nitrogen atmosphere, add 3,3-dimethylcyclohexyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (1.2 g, 4.25 mmol), 6-chloro-pyridin-3-ol (0.5 g, 3.86 mmol) and potassium hydroxide (238 mg, 4.25 mmol) to DMF (10 mL). Heat the mixture to 60° C. and stir overnight. Add water (20 mL) and diethyl ether (20 mL) and separate the layers. Extract the aqueous layer with diethyl ether (3×20 mL). Wash the combined organic extracts with brine (20 mL), dry over Na2SO4, filter, and concentrate in vacuo. Purify by chromatography on silica gel (80 g, pre-packed cartridge) eluting with hexane/EtOAc (1:0 to 1:1 over 60 min, 80 mL/min) to obtain the desired intermediate as a white solid (728 mg, 79%). MS (APCI+) m/z: 240 (M+H)+.
