Ethyl α-methyl-4,4,4-trifluoroacetoacetate (24.5 g, 124 mmol) and ammonium acetate (28.6 g, 372 mmol) were dissolved in ethanol (50 ml) and water (2.5 ml). The solution was heated under reflux for 16 hours, allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated to give the product as a pale brown liquid (25.5 g, 100% yield) which was used without further purification.
