Reaction Steps
1 g 6-Cyano-2,3-dihydroxyquinoxaline is added gradually to 10 ml of ice-cooled fuming nitric acid. The mixture is stirred at 25° C. for 1 h. The reaction mixture is poured into ice-water giving 1 g of a crude product. Recrystallization (DMF-water) gives 0.9 g (75%) of 6-cyano-2,3-dihydroxy-7-nitroquinoxaline, m.p. >300° C. IR: peak at 2240 cm-1,
