A p-methoxyphenylmagnesium halide as a Grignard reagent, obtained from a p-halogenoanisole (IV), is reacted with a 3,4-difluoro-1-iodobenzene (V) at a low temperature in the vicinity of 0° C. in an ether solvent in the presence of Ni catalyst to obtain a 3,4-difluoro-4'-methoxybiphenyl (VI), which is then reacted with HBr to obtain (III). These reactions are expressed by the following reaction equations: ##STR6##
