Procedure

To a solution of 1,3,4a,5,6,7-hexahydro-2H-quino[4,3,2-ef][1,4]-benzoxazepin-2-one (4.09 g) in tetrahydrofuran (100 ml) was added potassium t-butoxide (2.17 g) followed by methyl iodide (1.25 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred for 2 hrs at ambient temperature and then concentrated. The residue was stirred in water/ethyl ether, the precipitate was collected and dried to give 2.0 g (46%) of 1,3,4a,5,6,7-hexahydro-1-methyl-2H-quino[4,3,2-ef][1,4]benzoxazepin-2-one.
