Procedure

A 1.0 molar solution of boron tribromide (6.45 mL, 6.45 mmol BBr3) is added dropwise to a mixture of 1-(3,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinazolinyl)-3-(p-methoxyphenyl)urea (1.0 g, 3.22 mmol) in dichloromethane under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture is stirred overnight at room temperature, adjusted to about pH 8 with saturated sodium hydrogen carbonate solution, stirred for 2 hours, washed with water and filtered. The filter cake is dried, triturated with hot acetone, filtered and dried to give the title product as a white solid, 0.42 g, mp 220°-223° C., which is identified by 1HNMR spectral analysis.
